The Matigsalug are an Indigenous Lumad group whose name means "people along the Salug River"βnow known as the Davao River. Primarily residing in the highland areas of Bukidnon and Davao, they are deeply connected to the forests, rivers, and mountains that have sustained their communities for generations. In the municipality of Kitaotao, Bukidnon, the Matigsalug are recognized as the primary Indigenous group actively preserving and practicing their ancestral culture, particularly in barangays like Sinuda and Kiulom.Β
Their cultural identity is expressed through vibrant traditions such as tribal dances, intricate beadwork, and spiritual rituals that honor their connection to nature and community. A significant cultural event is the annual Alrew Te Matigsalug festival, celebrated every July 16 in Barangay Sinuda. This week-long gathering showcases traditional music, dances, and rituals, serving as a testament to the tribe's rich heritage and their efforts to pass it on to younger generations.
While the Matigsalug Tribal Village in Kitaotao is not yet open to the public, plans are underway to make it accessible, offering visitors an immersive experience into their way of life. In the meantime, the community continues to welcome those interested in learning about their culture through events and guided interactions. Engaging with the Matigsalug people allows visitors to appreciate the depth of their customs and the enduring spirit that continues to thrive in the heart of Bukidnon.
