In a meaningful step towards empowering Indigenous Peoples (IP) communities and promoting local craftsmanship, the Municipality of Kitaotao successfully launched the Sinuda Handicraft Project alongside the formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing with key partners — Del Monte Foundation, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), Department of Environment and Natural Resourses ( DENR) , Hon. Edwin P. Abucayan the Municipal Mayor , Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Tagolwanen Handwoven Assoc.,and the Barangay council of barangay Sinuda, Kitaotao, Bukidnon.
Held at the Cultural Building in Sinuda, this event marks a collaborative effort to strengthen the livelihood of local Matigsalug women weavers by helping them bring their craft into wider markets as the Pegsabeka Farmers Assoc. as been the beneficiary of the Agreement. Through this project, traditional weaving — a skill deeply rooted in the cultural identity of Kitaotao’s IP community — is being recognized not just as a cultural heritage, but as a sustainable livelihood opportunity.
The Sinuda Handicraft Project aims to open more doors for the local artisans by connecting them to larger networks, expanding their market reach beyond the boundaries of the municipality. This initiative is also a clear reflection of Kitaotao LGU’s dedication to supporting cultural preservation while fostering economic growth among its people.
The MOU signing formalizes the shared commitment of the stakeholders to work hand-in-hand in providing technical assistance, market linkage, and promotion of these locally-made crafts. With the support of the stake holders known for its work in community empowerment, this project hopes to inspire more opportunities for the IP communities in Kitaotao.
“This is not just about weaving products; this is about weaving opportunities, weaving dignity, and weaving the future of our Indigenous Peoples,” said one of the representatives during the event.
Through initiatives like this, Kitaotao proudly shows its commitment to preserving culture, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and empowering its IP communities — giving them a stronger voice and a brighter future.
